Assignment #1:
Abstraction
from Pictorial Themes and Found Color:
Measure
and Distortion
Image/TEXT:
- Choose an image or text (from ANY source) that has a compelling composition
- Using tracing vellum, do a line drawing that reduces image to an abstract composition. (Edit out any recognizable information or extraneous detail).
NOTE: You may
also zoom in on areas to obscure their recognizability
- Crop format to desired proportions.
- Prepare 2 supports that correspond to format of line drawing (ex: 5 x 7” drawing = 35” x 42” canvas)
- Transfer drawing onto support by using either a projector, transfer paper or grid scale.
*If using an opaque
projector, make a high contrast
black and white photocopy (or scan) of line drawing. The projection will be
much clearer!
Also, if you want to print drawing on clear acetate and use an overhead
projector that is also fine
Color:
- Find a color source that inspires you. (film still, cartoon, work of art, fabric, photograph, record album etc.)
- Determine color ratio of palette, from largest to smallest quantity
- Match found palette using Photoshop, paint swatches or old-school Color Aid.
- Pre-mix colors to match swatches
Paintings
- Make one painting that maintains proportions from line drawing and found color ratio.
- Make second painting that distorts proportions of the line drawing and uses the same palette in a totally different ratio.
- Bring to critique along with image source, line drawing, color source etc.
Critique
