FALL 2011 SYLLABUS

Approaches to abstraction: This critique class examines abstraction from pictorial themes, non-objectivity, abstract collage, and minimalism. Slide lectures, readings and class discussions concern historical precedents and the contemporary relevance of abstract painting.
  • SKETCHBOOK:Maintain a sketchbook for this class to include found imagery, preliminary drawings/collages, brainstorming; notes from critiques, slide lectures, and readings.
  • CRITIQUE:  As the primary focus of this class, all students must attend every critique.
  • SYLLABUS: Syllabus is subject to change at faculty’s discretion.
  • ATTENDANCE POLICY: No more than 2 unexcused absences in order to pass.
  • PUNCTUALITY: Tardiness disrupts the flow of class, deeply frustrates the professor and overall curtails your education: 2 tardies = 1 absence
  • ELECTRONIC DEVICE ETIQUETTE: No cell phone or laptop use in classroom except for presentation purposes. All ringers must be silenced before entering classroom.
  • GRADING: In order to pass this course, students must come prepared for class, complete all assignments and fully adhere to the above attendance policy.

  • CRITIQUE SCHEDULE: If for any reason you need to miss your scheduled critique time, you are responsible for finding a student from the other group to swap times with. You may not be added to the other group without making this arrangement.
